Canton of Vic-on-Pail

The canton of Vic-on-Pail is a administrative division French located in the department of the the Moselle and the area Lorraine.

Geography

It is located at the south of the department of the Moselle, in the basin of the Saulnois. It is crossed by the river Seille. This canton is organized around Vic-on-Pail in the Arrondissement Castle-Saline. Its altitude varies from 195 m (Vic-on-Pail) to 317 m (Moyenvic) for an average altitude of 237 Mr.

History

Following the “law carrying reduction of the number of district courts of 1801”, it absorbed the old cantons of Arracourt, Bourdonnay and Marsal.

The Treated of Frankfurt with amputee the canton of the communes which remained French between 1870 and 1918. It was a question for the Germans of controlling the axis Metz - Strasbourg (current D955) by annexing the communes which were next to this road like those located at north to ensure territorial continuity.

Communes more in the south: Arracourt, Athienville, Bathelémont-lès-Bauzemont, Bezange-the-Large, Bore-holes, Coincourt, Juvrecourt, Réchicourt-the-Small and Xures thus remained French. Those form today the Canton of Arracourt in Meurthe-et-Moselle.
