Canton of Trévières

The canton of Trévières is a administrative division French located in the department of the Calvados and the area Basse-Normandie.

Geography

This canton is organized around Trévières in the Arrondissement of Bayeux. Its altitude varies from 0 m (Bricqueville) to 81 m (Blay) for an average altitude of 39 Mr.

History

Rich person in beautiful churches (Louvières, Formigny, Rubercy, etc) and in manors and farms of the XVIIe-XVIIIè centuries, the canton of Trévières makes only two incursions into the great history, but they are decisive: It April 15th, 1450, the French troops crush the English reinforcements with Formigny, precipitating the end of the English occupation in Normandy and thus of the one hundred year old war It June 6th, 1944, the beaches of Vierville-Saint-Laurent and Colleville, from now on immortalized under the name of Omaha-beach, see being held a capital phase of the unloading of the Allies. The American cemetery of Colleville-on-sea testifies to the violence of the engagements.
