Canton of Torcy

The canton of Torcy is a French administrative division , located in the department of Seine-et-Marne and the area Île-de-France.

History

When on February 26th, 1790 is created the “Department of Seine-et-Marne”. Torcy is one of the 540 communes. Neither more, nor less. Admittedly cantons gathering several communes were created but it is about an abstract and sometimes incoherent cutting. 1833 should be waited until (Law of June 22nd) so that the cantons become electoral constituencies. Torcy then makes part of that of Lagny on Marne which counts 29 communes (1) and 16.700 inhabitants. This fastening will last more than one century. In 1975, taking into account the beginnings of the increase in population related to the arrival in the Marne the Valley and in order to stick to more close with the perimeter of installation, the canton of Lagny will lose the 10 communes (2) concerned with this operation, thus giving birth, on October 8th, with the canton of Torcy, of the name of the most populated commune time, which becomes about it in fact the city place chief. The canton then counts 13.000 inhabitants of which the quarter live Torcy. Ten years later, the population of the Valley Maubuée, literally exploded. The canton counts more than 50.000 inhabitants. With (in 2000) 38236 inhabitants, it is currently the 7th canton (on 43 and after those - in the decreasing order - of Fontainebleau, Danmartin, Meaux Northern, Combs the City, Perthes and Roissy in Brie) of Seine-et-Marne.
