Canton of Slats

The canton of Slats is a French Canton in the department of the Herault, in area Languedoc-Roussillon.

Canton renewed in 2004, renewable in 2010.

Territory and history

Located at the south of Montpellier, it is composed of the communes of Lattes, Palavas-the-Floods and Pérols.

It was created in 1992 by the exit of these communes of the Canton of Montpellier-5 which included/understood districts of the south of this city (Aiguerelles, Close to Arenas, Rauze, Saint Martin's day).

Before January 1st, 2005, the three communes of the canton belong to the structures of intercommunality of the agglomeration of Montpellier, the District of Montpellier become community of agglomeration. To this date, Palavas-the-Floods adhered to the Communauté communes of the Country of Gold and public transport between Montpellier and the Seaside resort became competence of the General advice.

The canton and its problems

The canton consists of residential cities in Banlieue montpelliéraine, cash of great retail parks with Lattes and Pérols, and of the tourist activities with Palavas.

Among the political problems of the canton, one finds:

the management of important flows of circulation on the secondary roads bound for the shopping malls of the east of the canton and the beaches through territories and urban centres which were not always prepared to accommodate them,
the management of the river and rain water run-off in a littoral plain. The Lez, dammed up as of Montpellier, is known for its exceptional risings (“lézades”),
the management of water and waste resulting from the Purification plant of Céreirède (Slats) and the discharge of Thôt (southern of Slats), equipment of the community of agglomeration of Montpellier, but whose common users and the harmful effects always overflow on nonCommunity territories.
