History

Place of human occupation very old, Valdaine (contraction of " Valley of Ainan" , of the name of the river which sprinkles all the extent of the cantonal territory) is inhabited in the beginning around and on the Lake Paldru (communes of Paladru and Montferrat, which are in the west of the canton). A lake city is indeed built, with houses on pile. During the Early middle ages, around the lake a community singular, known as settles of the Peasant-Knights. At the 11th century the church of Voicing, always visible is built today, which makes of it the oldest church of the Dauphine one. At the next century construction begins from the church of Saint-Geoire, masterpiece now classified (and restored lately).

As from the modern time, the area of Saint-Geoire is characterized by a strong resistance to the huguenote influence, which develops around Grenoble. Saint-Geoire is a catholic stronghold and will remain it: in 1590, an army of 80 Grenoble-native huguenots armed with arquebuses attack the Strong House of Saint-Geoire, who only resists then with the assistance of the inhabitants of Virieu, led by their lord of the manor.

As of the 16th century, the history of Valdaine is indeed dominated by the castle of Longpra, located with the top of Saint-Geoire. The castle of Longpra belongs to the same family since 1536 (inhabited today by the countess of Franclieu whose husband, resulting from the owner family, was mayor of Saint-Geoire of 2001 to 2007). The ditches and the drawbridge which gives access the castle testify to what was theStrong one of Longpra to the Middle Ages: an austere and well defended residence. Since 1755, Pierre-Antoine Pascalis de Longpra, Adviser at the Parliament of Grenoble, make rebuild the Strong House according to the architectural guns of the Great century. He resorts to the masons and carpenters of Valdaine like to the contest of cabinetmakers from Grenoble. The result is one charming traditional castle, adapted to the sumptuous receptions of the nobility from the Dauphine. During the revolution, which “was born besides” in 1788 in Vizille, in the south of Grenoble, Valdaine remains with the variation of the storm, and is faithful to Catholicism counter-revolutionary. The Castle of Longpra shelters the clergy not swearer, and the surrounding population comes to the castle to hear the mass clandestinely.

In 1881, the vast commune of Saint-Geoire is cut down by three of its hamlets which are set up in communes: Massieu, Saint-Sulpice-of-Rivoires and Velanne. Very rural enclave, Valdaine however sees developing at the 19th century, all along Ainan, of the factories specialized in the textile.

In the second part of the 20th century, the canton is dominated by the personality of Andre CHAIZE, general adviser of 1949 to 1992. Tourism develops around the Lake Paladru. In 1995, two communes of the East of the canton, Merlas and Voicing, are included in the regional natural park of Chartreuse, created this year there. The canton knows a vigorous resumption of its demography. Valdaine is a very green natural space today, the country holidays develops, dominated by the lake of Paladru, the castle of Longpra and the Natural park of Chartreuse.
