History of the Village Text of William Meyer

The oldest mention of Roybon goes back to XIIe century. At the end of the next century, in 1294, the dolphin Humbert Ier grants Roybonnais a charter of franknesses and allows the creation of Villeneuve. The borough develops then inside its ramparts with the foot of the stone castle which perhaps takes again the site of the original mound castrale (the St.Romme castle). Around, the forest delphinale starts to be actively cleared and its best grounds emphasized. It is on this forest, not far from the borough, that concessions are granted by the dolphin since 1338 then by the lords of Roybon to families of glassmakers who will ensure during several centuries an abundant production.

After the transport (the sale) of Dauphine in 1349, which marks its fastening with the crown of France, Roybon passes from lord as a lord until the revolution.

At the conclusion of the wars of religion, one finds in the borough an important Protestant community. It specializes in the industry of the frieze, i.e. the large “wool cloths”, intended in particular for the clothing of the troops and whose manufactures do of Roybon one of the principal centers of the Dauphine one.

In spite of a relative insulation and the absence of a good road, Roybon operates economic exchanges with areas remote and often acquired with the ideas of the reform like the Genevese country or Trièves. At least the quarter of its population still lives some, often in complement of the agricultural work, at the end of the XVIIIe century perhaps when the population reaches 2500 hearts. More than fifty weaving looms there are then listed!

At the beginning of the XIXe century, this périclite activity quickly because of serious economic difficulties.

With the revolution, where the name of Roybon is changed for a time into that of Chambaran, less suspect with the eyes of the Revolutionists, the agricultural activity also constitutes a share important of the incomes of the community. But the thin and acid grounds do not allow quite advantageous outputs. Also this is especially the breeding, the fodder and the exploitation of the forest which constitute the main wealths of Roybonnais.

The XIXe century, exploiting with best the resources, local, of new industries succeed the frieze: edge-tool industries, pottery, coal-scuttles or exploitation of the bark of oak for the tanneries make of Roybon a small industrial center in Chambaran. The royal road of Novels to the Coast-Saint-Andre, decided in 1772, but who took a long time to be born, finally makes it possible to lower the transport costs. My first half of the XIXe century thus marks the apogee of the development of the commune whose population rises with nearly 3000 hearts. In 1881, the military camp of Chambaran, located at a few kilometers, contributes to the rise of the village and at the beginning of our century, the creation of the tram line between Saint-Marcellin and Lyon complete to disenclose Roybon.

Roybon thus preserves in the walls of its houses the print of a clay country and rollers. Capital of Chambaran, brood in the middle of an immense forest, the commune opens its doors to you and proposes to you to discover his past.
