Canton of Izernore
The canton of Izernore is a administrative division French located in the department of the Ain and the area the Rhone-Alps.
Geography
This canton belongs to the Arrondissement of Nantua. It covers the western north the Top Bugey on the folds of the Berthiand Mounts by stretching on 25km north in the south, over an average width of 6km. The river of Ain which draws its Western border, separates it from the Revermont. Its tormented relief varies the altitude of the territory of 260m (level of the Ain in Bétet, commune of Serrières-on-Ain) with 862m (mountain of the Bumblebee, commune of Ceignes).
History
The current Canton results, roughly speaking, of fusion into 1800 of two cantons: that of Sonthonnax (Mornay, Samognat, Matafelon, Sonthonnax, Napt, Barns, Izernore, Bolozon) and that of Leyssard (Leyssard, Peyriat, Volognat, Cattle sheds, Shawls, St Alban, Labalme). Mornay becomes chief town of the Canton lately formed.-
1827 : The chief town is transferred from Mornay to Izernore.
- 1830 : Serrières on Ain is detached from Leyssard. The canton gathers 16 communes then.
- 1831 : Labalme and St Alban require and obtain their fastening with the canton of Poncin.
- 1939 : Shawls is attached to Poncin.
- 1972 : Creation of the SIVOM of the Canton of Izernore
- 1973: Barns amalgamates with Matafelon (Matafelon-Barns), Mornay with Volognat (Nurieux-Volognat) and Sonthonnax the Mountain absorbs Napt. The canton counts nothing any more but 10 communes.
- 1994 : Dissolution of Sivom of the canton of Izernore and creation of the the Community of communes of the Mounts Berthiand, gathering the whole of the communes of the canton.
