Canton of Glaris
The canton of Glaris (in German ) is a Swiss Canton.
History
- Between 1798 and 1803, it belongs to the Canton of Linth.
Geography
The canton of Glaris is dominated by the valley of the Linth. The major part of the sector is mountainous. The culminating point of the canton is the Tödi with a top located at 3614m.
Political organization
Glaris is one of both Swiss Cantons (with Appenzell Rhodos-Interior) to maintain the Landsgemeinde , annual meeting of the members of the primary Assemblée of the citizens in order to vote the modifications of laws suggested by the Council of State and the various commissions.Since Landsgemeinde of May 6th, 2007, Glaris is the first Swiss canton to introduce the vote as of 16 years at the cantonal level.
Communes
The canton of Glaris does not count a city (10 000 inhabitants minimum) and is not divided into districts. Landsgemeinde decided into 2006 to reduce the number of communes to three: Northern Glaris, Southern Glaris and Glaris Center.
