Geography
History
The canton, hardly separated from the department of Nievre by that from Coulanges-on-Yonne, has 2.900 hab., 11 communes, 20.364 ha including 4.937 of wood. It extends to the west on the plate from limestones portlandiens, whose stone was very exploited; one visits there in Aubigny, in the commune of Taingy (260 hab., 2.081 ha), the underground careers which were used in many monuments as Paris, of which the town hall; a workshop of size and initiation to the size is maintained there. Taingy had more than 1.000 hab. at the XIXe century, 520 in 1950. The sources of Ouanne are a little with of Taingy, in Ouanne precisely (660 hab., 3.820 ha), 12 km NO of Courson.
To the east and the south, the canton extends on the plate from the lower step, of rather confused relief, where the forest of Frétoy is spread out. It pushes in addition to-forest a point towards the south, where the village of Druyes-the-Beautiful-Fountains (300 hab., 3.948 ha including 1.896 of wood), classified as “village of character”, is known for the ruins of its powerful castle of 12th and 14th S., a door of the old enclosure and its Romance church. Courson (which are “the Careers” only since 1878) and Druyes (which is “the Beautiful-Fountains” only since 1925) respectively had 1.400 hab. and 1.100 about 1880 and were depopulated since, even if the movement seems braked in Courson. Ouanne had absorbed into 1972 the communes of Chastenay in the west and Merry-Dryness in the east, but Merry-Dryness (180 hab., 1.417 ha), 5 km in the north of Courson, took again its independence since 1979. After a long depopulation, Ouanne as Merry-Dryness regained some inhabitants since 1982.
