Canton of Basle-Countryside

Basle-Countryside is a canton located at the North-West of the Suisse. In German .

Geography

The canton is in the North-West of Switzerland. With some exceptions, it covers the communes of the valley of Laufon along Birse as well as the common broadsides by the Ergolz. The shape of the canton is rather irregular. These borders are due to the agglomerations which cut out the canton.

It belongs to the smallest Swiss cantons, 19e on 26. Because of its strong concentration of population, it occupies to it tenth place in the classification according to the population.

Basle-countryside is bordered in the east and the North-East by the Canton of Argovie and by the the Rhine, which forms a natural border with the Germany. At north Basle-City is located. By continuing north-western direction, one finds a border with the France. The Canton of Soleure is located at the south. It also has enclaves in the west of the canton of Basle-Countryside. To finish, the Canton of the Jura is in south-west.

History

The demicanton of Basle-Countryside was born in 1833 from the partition from the Canton from Basle following a civil war.
