Canton of Aups

The canton of Aups is a administrative division French located in the department of the Var and the area Provence-Alp-Coast of Azure.

Geography

This canton is organized around the town of Aups in the south. It belongs to the Arrondissement of Brignoles. Its altitude varies from 390 m (in the commune of Aups) to 1577 m at the top of the Grand Margins (Aiguines) with an average altitude of 683 m.
The the Verdon and the Artuby are the only rivers of the canton, they delimit north and is cantonal territory. One can all the same recognize some torrents or brooks which do not have any more a perennial source like the Sand-gravel mix which crosses Aups, the small valleys of Valmoissine (Aups) and Jean Gay (Aiguines), or the ravines of Pierre Martin, Caletty and Combe with Bauduen and Vérignon. There are also some sources like the source of Vaumale in the Gorges of the Verdon, Do it Croutade with Vérignon or the old source of Fountain the Bishop disappeared under water from the Lac from Holy-Cross.
the Gorges of the Verdon skirting the limit of the commune of Aiguines with the department of the Alp-of-High-Provence are deepest of Europe with more than 700 meters of cliff. This very tourist place attracts more than one million visitors per annum.
The Plan of Canjuers is a plate of high-altitude (average: 800m) of karstic rock, which is then a plate of grazing ground without tree. This lunar place liked so much by Jean Giono was selected to install the vastest military camp of Europe (24000 ha) since 1970. 3/5 of the territory of the commune of Aiguines is occupied by the military camp of Canjuers, vastest of Europe.
The Barrage of Holy-Cross was built in the valley of the the Verdon at the entry of the Low Gorges of the Verdon in 1977, the old village of the Salles was destroyed and new was rebuilt 100m higher for the rise of water of the future lake. Many treasures were absorbed as the Roman bridge which passed to the top of the old course the Verdon or the fountain the Bishop, the source having the strongest flow of Provence, this water left the ground water of the Canjuers one vastest of France. 3/4 of the territory of the commune of the Salles on the Verdon is under water of the Lac of Holy-Cross.
The territory is based on the first buttresses of the the Alps, indeed the chain of the Cuguyons (985m at the top of the signal of the Eagle), Espiguières (880m), the Grand Margins (1577m), the serrière of Lagne (1108m) and the mountain of Beausoleil (1150m) are the southernmost mounts of the the Alps.
