History
- In 1597, the canton of Appenzell, integrated in the Confederation of the XIII cantons in 1513, was separate for religious reasons into two demicantons, Appenzell Rhodos-External (of confession Protesting E) and Appenzell Rhodos-Interior (of confession Catholique)
- Of 1798 to 1803, it belonged to the Canton of Säntis.

- Appenzell Rhodos-External is larger than Appenzell Rhodos-Interior
