History

The presence of the man on the territory dates from Prehistory as the discovery testifies some of more than 600 flint blades. Vases filled with Roman currencies attest that the village is also occupied at the time Gallo-Roman. In 1065, Cawentin appears in the charter of restoration of the Abbaye of Hasnon and the village is again quoted in 1079, in the title of foundation of the Abbaye of Anchin. Gerard II, bishop of Cambric and Arras, give the cure of cantin to the Abbey which preserves it until the Revolution. In 1109, the fourth abbot of Anchin sets up Cantin downtown. The gifts of the successive lords allow the Abbaye of Anchin and Flines to be each one owners of rich and wide fields on the territory of Cantin. The Lords of the manor of Douai are the first known lords. In 1285, a heir to this house, Jehan, knight of Boutier, which also holds the stronghold of Hamel, takes the name of Cantin. From 1247, Cantinois profit from a law defining their rights and their duties, known as " Law of Cantin". In 1350, the seigniory passes to the family of Wastines, that of Halluin in 1360, with Allenes about 1500 and Dion as from 1512. The village is set fire to by François Ier whereas it crosses all the area at the end of 1521. The seigniory is sold in Caudron, shareholders of Douai, in 1677. After several repurchases it is allotted in 1721 to a member of the famous family of Rémy, one of oldest of Douai. The territory of Flesquières is added to that of Cantin, located in Flanders Wallonne before the Revolution; the village, which extends between Cantin and Arleux, formed part of Hainaut before. Theater of violent one confrontations at the 18th century, Flesquières would have belonged to holy Aldegonde, founder of the Abbaye of Maubeuge and was shaven in 1793.
