The manuscript of the Cantigas de Santa Maria is one of the most important collections of monophonic songs of the medieval literature in Occident, written during the reign of the king de Castille Alphonse X known as El Sabio or Wise the (1221-1284). These songs are the religious shutter of the Littérature galaïco-Portuguese, the profane shutter includes/understands the cantigas amigo , the cantigas of amor and the cantigas of escarnio .

The texts of the 427 songs are written in Galaïco-Portuguese, language of the Middle Ages common to the Portuguese and the Galician . One allots to the king himself the drafting some of these songs, but it seems more probable than he is the promoter.

The great majority of these songs are a religious anthem, in homage to the Virgin Mary, and tell a Miracle due to the intervention of Marie. One finds there moreover many representations colors of musicians playing a large variety of Musical instruments.

At the time modern, many musical interpretations were made by it by groups of medieval Musique such as In Taberna, Tempradura, the Nave, Alla Francesca, the Ensemble Unicorn or Hespèrion XX.
