Cantata
A cantata (of the Italian " cantata" takes part last substantivized verb " cantare" , " chanter" ) is a vocal and instrumental composition which comprises several pieces. It generally carries on a topic which can be profane ( cantata da camera ) or crowned ( cantata da chiesa ), but to the difference of the opera, it does not comprise any theatrical aspect.
It is at the time baroque that the cantata truly took its rise and that it was essential like a major kind.
In Italy, the type-setters of the most famous cantatas are Claudio Monteverdi, Giacomo Carissimi, Alessandro Scarlatti and Antonio Vivaldi.
In England and Germany, it is necessary to quote Georg Friedrich Haendel, Georg Philipp Telemann, Dietrich Buxtehude, Jean-Sebastien Bach, Johann Pachelbel.
In France, the cantata indicates a a little different kind: of profane subject, with light manpower (one to three votes, some instruments and the low continuous one). The principal Masters are Nicolas Bernier, Michel Pignolet de Montéclair and especially Louis-Nicolas Clérambault.
At the time romantic, this kind fell in disuse. Later, of the romantic type-setters like Robert Schumann or Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy will give it to the honor. Then to the 20th century Arthur Honegger and Igor Stravinski, amongst other things, their contributions to the repertory will bring.
