The Cantabrie is a autonomous Communauté of Spain made up of only one Province, also called Cantabrie. It is surrounded by the Basque Country (province of Biscay), the Asturies and Castille-and-León (provinces of Burgos, León, and Palencia). It is bordered by the sea Cantabrique. Santander is the capital of this community. The national park of the Pics of Europe is located at horse on Cantabrie, Asturies and Castille-and-León, in the mountainous solid mass of the same name.
Before the Roman period, Cantabrie was inhabited by people called the Cantabres . This name does not have any relationship with Cantabrigia , the version Latin E of Cambridge. Many authors put forth assumptions on the name of Cantabres, of which Isidore of Seville, Julio Caro Baroja, Aureliano Fernández Guerra, Joaquín Gonzalez Echegaray, like Adolf Schulten. There does not exist consensus, however much of experts suggest that this word derives from the Celtic root cant- , meaning “rock” or “stone”, and of the suffix - abr , used in many Celtes areas. One can thus deduce from it that the word cántabro means “to live in the mountains”, in reference to the rocky ground from Cantabrie.
