Cantabres

The Cantabres are a whole of eleven people Celtes which occupied part of the north of the Spain, close to Santander and Bilbao, in the mountains of current the autonomous Communauté of Cantabrie. They had as neighbors the Vaccéens and the Turmoges in the south, the Autrigons in the east and the Astures in the west. They defied the Roman legions a long time between their first war against the Romans in 150 av. J. - C. and their final tender, more than one century later. They were subjected only when Agrippa and Auguste carried out the Guerres cantabres (29 av. J. - C. - 19 av. J. - C.) which ended in their partial extinction. As from this moment, their grounds belonged to the Roman province of Tarraconaise, where they could control themselves a little. They romanisèrent little by little, but lived in villages and are mentioned little in the History. They provided recruits for the Roman army, like their neighbors asturiens. Their grounds contained black leads.

The eleven people cantabres were Avarigines, Blendii (or Plentusii), Camarici, Concani, Coniaci, Moroecani, Noegi, Orgenomesci, Salaeni, Vadinienses and Velliques.
