Canouan is a island of the Archipel of the Grenadian pertaining to Saint-Vincent-and them Grenadian.

History

The first inhabitants of Canouan were Indian the Caribbean which arrived in the Grenadian of the thousands of years before our era and which baptized the island “Hairoun”. They were followed by the Arawak S coming from current the Venezuela which introduced the rudiments of the Agriculture and from the fishing.

Christophe Colomb would have been the first European to discover Canouan but the Indians opposed to them a strong resistance thanks to the relief and to the forests of the island. black slaves which succeeded in escaping from the other islands took refuge on Canouan and, while mixing with the Caribbean Indians, were known under the name of “the black Caribbean”. Hatred common to both people for the white enabled them to resist any attempt at colonization of the island. As fugitive slaves arrived, the Indians became minority on their island. They thus made it possible to Europeans to settle in 1719 what obliged the fugitive ones to take refuge in the forests.

In 1748, the treaty of Aachen founded a neutrality of Canouan between the the United Kingdom and the France. But in 1763, the English claimed sovereignty on the island after the first war against the Caribbean . In 1779, the French recover the island following a rendering of Anglais : none between-them had succeeded in putting the hand on the key opening the room containing artillery of the island.

With the treaty of Versailles, the English give the hand on Canouan but were opposed in a second war against the Caribbean (or the war of the brigands ) confronting them with the black Caribbean carried out by Duvallier and an Indian chief called Chatoyer or Chatawar. In 1797, after a hard battle, the British manage to encircle their adversaries which choose rendering. 5  The 000 black Caribbean are then off-set towards the British Honduras where still their descendants live and the Caribbean last were withdrawn until today in the mountainous part in north of the island.

In 1871, Saint-Vincent, on which Canouan depends, is attached to the British colony Windward Islands.

In 1969, Saint-Vincent-and them Grenadian obtains internal autonomy (the United Kingdom continuing to manage the foreign affairs and defense) and the October 27th 1979, the Indépendance is total.

Geography

Canouan belongs to the Lesser Antilles and is located between the islands of Union and Moustique.

The island measures only five kilometers and half of length and two kilometers broad. The North of the island mountainous, is covered with forests and little urbanized. The South consists of a long peninsula delimiting bay of Charleston and where dwellings and infrastructures concentrate (Hôtel S, Route S, Aéroport, port, etc). The principal village is Charlestown.

Two small small islands, Islot and Canouan Whale , are close to the southern parts of Canouan. In the East and the South-east of the peninsula is a barrier of coral.

The climate is tropical and the island can undergo the passage of the Cyclone S.

The Golf of Canouan, created by Jim Fazio, is regarded as one of most beautiful the Antilles because being at the top of the Royal Mount.

The airport is served by air lines coming from Saint-Vincent, the Barbados, the Martinique and Puerto Rico.

The island is located at 12°42' Northern Latitude and 61°20' of Longitude Western.

Economy

Canouan is tourist and attracts visitors thanks to its Plage S, its sites of Plongée underwater, its golf, its casino and its places of reproduction of marine tortoises.

The player of NBA and politician Adonal Foyle is originating in this island.

Canouan has an airport (code AITA: CIW).
