Canon with ions
A gun with ions is a device allowing the propulsion of Ions in a preset direction.
They are mainly used in the research sector, for example for the analysis of surface.
Their principle of operation is comparable with that of the ionic propellent used in the aerospace one. A plasma (ionized gas) is created within the machine and the ions which compose it are then extracted and propelled in a direction by an electromagnetic field. The flow of particles involves a erosion and a heating of the materials which are exposed there.
The use of guns with ions as weapons was often considered, in particular since work of Nikola Tesla and its " Death ray the ". Today, however, electricity consumption, the size and the complexity of machines able to carry out damage comparable with the modern classic armament prevent from making an interesting alternative of it.
In spite of that, the gun with ions was a place in the Science-fiction, as well with the cinema and on television as in the video games.

In the televised series Stargate SG-1, the gun with ions is a very effective anti-aircraft defense conceived by the Tollan. This weapon can very easily destroy sailplanes of dead the and to even destroy of only one shooting a flagship Goa' uld orbits about it around a planet. At the time of an episode, Goa' uld had located and destroyed all the guns with ions before those do not have time to draw. Fortunately the Nox had hidden one of them, and the vessel of the type Hata' K was destroyed easily. Jack O' Neill tried on several occasions to convince Tollan to provide them the plans of these guns to be able to manufacture some to protect the Ground, but Tollan always refused. Tollan contacted SGC later on to offer the plans of the gun to them to ions in exchange of Trinium. SG-1 decided to inquire into the sudden surge of generosity of Tollan and discovered that Tollan were not any more with the shelter of Goa' uld because those had again developed shield which returned the guns to completely useless ions. Unfortunately, Tollan were destroyed by Goa' uld before they can give a specimen of the gun to ions with the SGC whereas manufacture by the scientists of the SGC is impossible. In the series of video games Command & Conquer, the GDI (Grouping of Defense International or Total Defense Initiative in English) uses a gun with ions placed on a satellite to attack the installations of the Confrérie of Nod. In the series of the Command & Conquer: Generals, the United States lays out of an alternative of this weapon called gun with particles which uses an orbital mirror to think towards the target a ray coming from a generator of the ground.
