Canoas is a city Brésil ienne of the State of the Rio Grande C Sul. It is located at a Latitude of 29º 55 ' 12" south and by a Longitude of 51° 10 ' 48" west, with a Altitude of 8 meters. Its population was estimated at 333.322 inhabitants in 2006. The municipality extends on 131 km ².

History

The Indigenous S of the tribe S Slap and Minuano lived the grounds where the municipality was created, when, starting from 1725, the European penetration started with the cowherds, whose Francisco Pinto Bandeira is regarded as the founder of Canoas.

Once conceded the first grounds, in 1733, Pinto Bandeira, while being installed on two properties, along the Rio back Sinos, based the Fazenda Gravataí , on the Colline of Abílio, known under the name of Estância Velha.

Since 1795, the Fazenda was directed by various descendants of Pinto Bandeira, and was, in 1861, finally divided between the heirs. The locality developed around the original core of the property, made up of personnel of the property not-remunerated and rural workers.

With the arrival of the Railroad, in 1874, the locality undergoes modifications. It fell on the Major Vicente da Silva Freire to found the city and to develop the settlement, by the ground sale around the Gare. At the same time, Olavo Ferreira, another descendant, created the Paroisse of Sãos Luís.

The origin of the name - Canoas- was justified by the factory of Canot S ( canoas , in Portuguese), that there had created major Vicente, and intended for the port of Sobrado.

Administrative formation

The District was created the December 26th 1912 by the Municipal Acte n° 48 , and the Municipality the June 27th 1939 , by the Décret of State 7. 839 . There were two districts: Canoas and Berto Círio. Currently, they are those of Canoas and Santa Rita.
