Cannet

Cannet (in Occitan Of Provence: Lo Canet according to the traditional standard or Lou Canet according to the Norme mistralienne) is a common French, located in the department of the the Alpes-Maritimes and the area Provence-Alp-Coast of Azure. Its 43.200 inhabitants are called the Cannetans , not to confuse with the Gentilé cannetois allotted to the Cannet-of-Moors, in the department close to the Var. Classified flowered and tourist city, Cannet received in 2006 the regional price of the inheritance for the development of its environment. The pines mimosas, eucalyptus, orange trees, olive-trees, are staged with hillside soft inclined. Dominating bay of Cannes, a panorama offers to contemplate the islands of Lérins and the cornice of the Esterel. The heart of the Cannet old man is typically of Provence with its pedestrian frontages ochers, its lanes and routes, and its architectural heritage.

Geography

Chief town of canton, the city is located at approximately 2 kilometers of the sea the Mediterranean, in the north of the Plage S and the ports of Cannes. It is also called “the Madeira of France”, nickname which one owes to the doctor Pietra Santa, who thus named it by discovering the city in 1862 whereas he returned from the island of Madeira, with the the Canaries. The city profits from a panoramic sight of the Islands of Lérins to the solid mass of Estérel.

Its climate is of Mediterranean type. Its site, sheltered well by an amphitheater of hills covered with pines, olive-trees, mimosas, orange trees and eucalyptus, makes it possible the town of enjoy a microclimate, marked by a low moisture and extremely rare periods of freezing, even in winter. These characteristics make of it a health resort and of holiday extremely appreciated, and this, as of the end of the 19th century.

Following the example Rome (cf seven hills of the ancient Rome), Cannet carries seven hills on the territory of its commune: Pézou, the Adhesive, the Thicket, Tightened Capeou, Clauvins, Make-Marie and Bréguières. An important Roman road, the Way Julia or “Via Julia” (homage to the girl of the Auguste emperor) which connected Arles to Rome, passes by the hills, and its trace is still visible nowadays.

History

Very early, the site of Cannet is occupied by the Romans who settle, plant olive-trees and baptize the place Olivetum .

At the 15th century, the monks of Lérins make come from the families coming from the valley from Oneille (today, a district of the town of Imperia) in Italy to clear and put in culture the grounds. In 1441, the abbey of Lérins concedes in Sylvestre Calvy of the cultivable grounds in Cannet (it is what is brought back in the oldest known document of the city). 140 families settle in Cannet between 1441 and 1500 and some of them will give their name to the districts of the city: Dany, Ardisson, Calvy and other Escarasse, Gourrin, Apie… dividing into hamlets all around the cultivable grounds called “close” (current center town and historical quarters).

Until 1778, date on which Cannet is constituted in an independent commune, the city was integral part of the common of Cannes. It is to some extent the urban, geographical and residential prolongation of Cannes.

Districts

Cannet comprises several districts which have their own life. Of is in West:
  • Hills: with its luxurious villas and residences, it is the natural prolongation of Super Cannes towards north
  • the Cannet old man: historical heart of the city, it abounds with a rich person architectural cultural heritage/(vaults, churches, turns…) and artistic (many craftsmen of arts are present along the street saint saver, principal way pedestrian). Old hamlets referred to above (Dany, Ardisson, Calvy…) and which surrounds the Cannet old man forms a " tampon" between this old heart and the modern city which was constituted as from the 19th century.
  • Rocheville: it at the same time more is extended and more populated districts. True " city in the ville" and currently in full reorganization, the district ensures the economic future of the city as a whole.
  • Aubarède: it is here that the event-driven and sporting complex of Palestre is.
  • Garybondy: district more poplulaire. Geographically in margin of the remainder of the city, it is more related to the districts of Ranguin and Bocca, in Cannes.

It is the 6th commune of the Alpes-Maritimes by its population in 2006 (4th in 1990) and the 1st commune by its density (5 468 hab/km ² against 4.766 hab. /km ² for Nice, which arrives in 2nd position), which makes of it the “most urbanized” commune of this department.

Places and monuments

Privileged by its situation and its environment typically of Provence, Cannet has a rich person cultural heritage and artistic.

The inheritance cannettan also makes the richness of the city:

  • the Vault Saint-Saver: restored and reconsidered by Théo Tobiasse, it is an old belfry.
  • the wall of in love one: painted by Raymond Peynet in the middle of the Old man-Cannet, he wants to transmit the message that this district is favourable with the reception of the young grooms.

  • the Church Holy-Catherine: she is classified historic building since the October 29th 1926. Built at the 16th century by the only will of Cannetans, it is the first parish church of Cannet. Its quadrangular tower dominates the city.

  • the Vault Our-Lady-of-Angels: historic building since the December 22nd 1941. By the testamentary will of one of the members of one of the founders families of Cannet, Guillaume Calvy, the vault is built in 1557 and is composed of a rectangular nave of plan and a porch open on outside.

  • the Tower of Danys: historic building since the December 22nd 1941. It bears the name of one of the families founders of Cannet and date of the medium of XVe century. It is also called “Turn of the brigands”.
  • the Tower of Calvys: bear the name of the first founder family of Cannet, arrived in 1441. In 1707, when the imperial ones to invade the area, the tower saved the inhabitants who took refuge there, whereas they were in fight under the direction of the Ardisson abbot.
  • the Vault Saint Bernardin: joined with the church Holy-Catherine, a long time unused as from the May 11th 1999, a place of exposure became.

The city was the place of stays of many famous hosts: Prosper Mérimée, the tragic actress Rachel, Auguste Renoir, the painter Pierre Bonnard, the Aga Khan, Henri Lebasque, the Begum who, unfortunately, died since 2001.
