Candlemass

Candlemass is a group of Doom metal Swedish formed during the Années 1980 by Leif Edling, leader and type-setter of the group.

History

The first album of Candlemass was Epicus Doomicus Metallicus , published in 1986 which is always regarded as a great classic of the scene Doom metal. According to some, it is this album which gave its name to the scene doom. The line-up of the group was then:

  • Matz Ekstrom - battery
  • Johan Lanquist - Song

The following album was Nightfall (1987), recognized like one of the best albums of Doom metal ever carried out, which gave a new dimension to the group because of changes in the formation (in particular with the appearance of Messiah Marcolin). The novel members were Messiah Marcolin (singer), Lars Johansson (principal guitarist) and Jan Lindh (beater). This formation is regarded as the “traditional” formation of Candlemass, and surely most recognized of all. The following albums were Ancient Dreams (1988) and Tales off Creation (1989). In 1990 a disc live was born and, to this period, of different the members of the group opposed, which caused the departure of Messiah Marcolin.

After the departure of Messiah Marcolin, Candlemass recruited the singer Tomas Vikstrom to record the album Chapter VI . The disc did not meet a big hit and gradually, the group separated, mainly because of the desire of the leader (Leif Edling) for beginning another project: Abstrakt Algebra .

This project proved to be a great loss of money. Thereafter, Leif has ressuscity Candlemass with a completely new formation and published new albums studio such as Dactylis Glomerata (it would seem that it is the scientific name of a plant to which Leif Edling is allergic) and From the 13th Sun . Without having the success of the first albums, the latter were very well accommodated by the critic and the public.

In 2002, the traditional line-up of Candlemass was reformed, while launching out in a round through Europe which had a great success near the fans, resulting in the recording from a disc live.

Recently, the first discs of Candlemass were republished (Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, Nightfall, Ancient Dreams and Tales Off Creation), and a DVD, entitle Documents Off Doom , with new songs and vidéos in mythical concerts. The group started to work on a new disc studio with some already recorded songs, but whereas they sought a contract with a recording company, the different ones opposed the members of the group giving place to a new dissolution.

Whereas nobody awaited them any more, Candlemass records in 2005 an album sobrement entitled Candlemass , which received criticisms very eulogistic in the press. The group seems well left to celebrate the 20 years of the Epicus Doomicus Metallicus …

Candlemass (and with stronger reason Leif Edling) is especially known neophytes with the Doom metal to be at the origin of the piece entitled Solitude which was taken again by many groups of all musical horizons such as: Anorexia Nervosa, Desired…

not to confuse with one of the songs of Black Sabbath also entitled Loneliness …
