Cancéropôle of Toulouse

The Cancéropôle of Toulouse represents a future pole of research on the Cancer with European dimension. Located at Langlade, in the south of the city, on the site highly symbolic system of the explosion of the factory AZF in 2001, Cancéropôle will represent a broad campus where various private and public actors will meet in order to collectively harmonize their research against the fight against cancer.

Arranged by the the Community of agglomeration of Large Toulouse, in partnership with the General advice of Haute-Garonne, the District council the Midday-Pyrenees, the State and the Europe, the site will extend on 220 hectares including 78 hectares of old factory AZF.

A regrouping of competences

Cancéropôle of Toulouse will gather various competences academic, scientific, technological, medical, clinical, pharmaceutical, public and deprived, with for same ambition, the fight against cancer.

It is the comparison, the exchange between different partners who constitute the key and the major stake of Cancéropôle. That will make it possible to better include/understand the bases of this disease like its propagation, to promote and implement joint projects to various disciplines and public agencies and private.

This exchange will also make it possible to develop a multi-field formation of quality, likely to attract international young talents.

This project will also make it possible to have a chain integrated for the prevention and the treatment of cancer (basic research, technological research, research and clinical trials, discovered and industrialization of new drugs and equipment).

Lastly, this concentration of research in the same site will initiate actions of valorization to facilitate the taking out of patents and licenses, the creation of new companies, the diversification and the development of existing companies and the search for partnerships with other areas and other countries.

So the activities and the projects of Cancéropôle gather around five poles, or centers of activities, which are the university private clinic of cancer (care to the patients and clinical research), the public research, private research, the innovation and the valorization of research as well as the formation.

Five poles within the cancéropôle

the University Private clinic of Cancer

The programming of this pole is in hand and the beginning of work is planned for the beginning of 2008. The opening is envisaged since 2011. The University Private clinic of Cancer will extend on 60.000 Mr. This clinical pole from international scale, will associate the Claudius-Régaud institute, the University hospital (CHU), the private clinics and the liberal medical sector, the French Establishment of blood, the regional network of Cancerology ONCOMIP, the general University and hospitals.

This new University Private clinic of Cancer will constitute a hospital unit devoted mainly to the innovation and research for the benefit of the patient. The access to its diagnostic and therapeutic platforms (consultations, operating room suites, technical plates with new technologies, beds and places) will be mutualisé. These various structures could thus be used by all the partners of the project.

The public research

The pole of public research will gather the principal teams of researchers concerned on Toulouse of the National institute of health and the medical research (INSERM), of the National center of the scientific research (CNRS) and the university world represented by the University hospital (CHU) of Toulouse as well as the Universities and Schools in the forefront of which the Université Paul-Sabatier (UT III), on nearly 10.000 m ² of laboratories.

This regrouping on the same site will make it possible to approach research by projects. To date, more than 300 researchers, engineers, technicians representing 23 multi-field research teams expressed their will to join Cancéropôle of Toulouse. This project of research center is registered with the contract of projects State-area 2007-13

Private research

The research deprived within Cancéropôle will be represented mainly by great French and foreign pharmaceutical groups. The engagement of the industrial actors is considerable, as well on the plan of the real investments as financial.

Thus, Sanofi Aventis, third world pharmaceutical group and first European group will be installerra on 80.000 m ² in 2010. On its side, the Group Pierre Fabre, pharmaceutical laboratory of world scale born in the Midday-Pyrenees will gather these research teams as well as development teams pharmaceutical and the integration of structures of management of the clinical trials, will give rise to a site of R & D, equipped with specific technical plates (biology, chemistry, pharmaceutical development…). The building Pierre Fabre (conceived by the architect Roger Taillibert) is with the first section of 40.000 m ² the first to be left ground (beginning of work in September 2006). Other international pharmaceutical groups expressed their interest for the project of Cancéropôle. Thus, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), second world pharmaceutical group, already engaged, within the framework of the pole of competitiveness Cancer-Bio-Health, to retain Toulouse and its scientific and economic potential, to develop to with it new co-operations in the field of the treatment of cancer. They is 15 million euros which will be devoted there with an important partnership between the Toulouse teams and the world center of excellence of research on the cancer (CEDD Oncology) of GSK based to Upper Providence to the the United States.

In 2010, one estimates that 2000 researchers will work on the site of the cancéropôle.

Innovation and Valorization

This pole envisages the creation of the Institut of advanced technologies of sciences of alive (ITAV) as well as the establishment of a seedbed of companies dedicated to the new companies of the sector of sciences of alive (bio-, nano and information technologies) with the creation of a hotel with research projects and of a hotel of start-up dedicated to sciences of the alive one.

The pole innovation and valorization, whose control of work is ensured by the community of agglomeration of Large Toulouse, will be located on a total real whole of 4.400m ² is an investment of 10 M€ (of which 3M€ of the State, 2,7 M€ of Large Toulouse, 2 M€ of Europe, 1,3 M€ of the Area, 1 M€ of the General advice of the Haute-Garonne). The building work of this building, whose control of work was entrusted by the Community of Agglomeration of Large Toulouse to the Toulouse agency architects Cardete and Huet, must start in spring 2007 for a programmed opening at the end of 2008.

Formation

Formation with the trades of sciences of the alive participle of the originality of the Cancéropôle project. It will be carried, at the time of the four-year plan 2007-2010, by the medical colleges and the universities of Toulouse (in particular the university Paul-Sabatier Toulouse III), as well as the universities like the National institute of sciences applied (INSA), the National institute of polytechnic of Toulouse (INPT), the École des Mines Albi-Carmaux, the National school veterinary surgeon de Toulouse (ENVT), the School of engineers de Purpan (ESAP), the institute Claude-Régaud, the data-processing IUT and health systems (Castrate) or Center of study and hospital formation (Cahors).

The various university and academic actors will offer multi-field formations to the trades of the Cancerology, and more largely in BioSanté, energy of sensitizing pre-academic until the postgraduate one as well as a reinforcement of teaching in continuing education.

The role of the university in continuing education will be paramount because of the evolution of the trades, of the reorientations of the individual professional paths and the emergence of new trades in the field of medical and ancillary medical one.

Within the framework of the pole of public research set up on Cancéropôle by the INSERM, the teaching CNRS and university, several projects and of formation are being studied, of which: an offer of licenses, a widened mastère, the creation of a doctoral school biology, health, biotechnologies adapted to the needs for the industrialists and the opening of formations to international (masters, summer schools, schools sets of themes).

A diversified offer of initial training and continues covering all the fields of the oncology will be also proposed within the University Private clinic of Cancer.
