Canary of the Canaries

The Serin of the Canaries is familiarly called canary , because it is originating in the islands the Canaries. In the beginning, it has a marbled plumage of green and brown, which enables him to be camouflaged in the Arbre S of its natural environment. It is close to the Verdier d' Europe ( Carduelis chloris ) and more still of the Serin cini ( Serinus serinus ).

Description

The Canary of the Canaries measures approximately 12,5 cm.

Distribution

This species is endemic of the Canaries (El Hierro, Palma, Will gum It, Tenerife and Gran Canaria, absent from Fuerteventura and Lanzarote), of Madeira and the Azores. It was introduced in Bermuda between 1870 and 1930.

Captivity

The captive birds are usually Jaune S, with white ends. Also one evokes the “yellow canary”. Stockbreeders indeed obtained, through genetic selections or of crossings, many changes of colors (Jaune, Blanc, Gris, orange, Isabelle, Rouge, marbled). The red canaries are yellow canaries carrying gene of the red color to which one gives a specific food to highlight this red factor.

The canary easily crosses with others Oiseau X of the family of the fringillidés . Certain hybrids result sterile, like that from the crossing between canary and elegant Chardonneret, called “mule” by analogy with the hybrid of the ass and the Jument. Others are fertile. Indeed, a crossing between canary and red Tarin of the Venezuela gives canaries of orange color. Among the other possible crossings, it happens that the female bullfinches peony cross with male canaries.

As for the majority of the domestic animals , there exist today several categories of “races” which one can draw up to have certain postures, or of the races more favourable with the song, and of the races to the very diverse external characteristics: the color (see above) and the plumage. Certain varieties are crested, others have a curly plumage, like “the curly Parisian one” or “curly Dutch” both curly, as their name indicates it, and of white color.

By its aptitude to be sung by integrating songs of other sparrows, the canary became most popular of the birds of cage. Thus, there exist races Dutch, American, French, Japanese, British…

Harz, race of canary of song, sings the whole of its turns (trilles) the closed nozzle, only by inflating the throat.
