Canary Wharf , on the Isle off Dogs , is a district of businesses of forty hectare developed in edge of the the Thames in the London east. Developed as from the years 1980, it became the most important business district of London after the City. At the end of 2006, approximately 90.000 people worked in Canary Wharf, in particular in the bank and the edition. One finds there the three higher skyscrapers of the the United Kingdom.

History

Canary Wharf is on the Isle off dogs , peninsula formed by an arm of the Thames and located in Tower Hamlets, borough rather economically underprivileged which is located in the East End, with a few kilometers in the east of the City. Isle off dogs is in the middle of the Docklands, which was the great London harbor center. In second half of the XXe century, the port activity declined in the docklands with the profit of zones located more at the esr, more with the variation of the city. In 1980, the docks of Isle off dogs close, and the port activity ceases in the docklands. The district is then in a crisis. An organization, London Docklands Development Corporation, east creates to try to revitalize it.

At the end of the years 1990, the economic situation becomes definitely more favorable and the district is done definitely more accessible since the center from London thanks to an extension of the underground line Jubilee Line . Constructions begin again then and Canary Wharf experiences a strong development.
