Canary (Haute-Corse)

Canari is a common French, located in the department of the Haute-Corse (Cape Corsica) and the Corsica area . Every two years is held an international Contest to with it lyric song (president of the jury: Gabriel Bacquier).

Geography

History

The occupation of the site goes back to Antiquity, since one finds mentioned the name of Kanelate (at the origin of the name Canari) on the charts of Ptolémée to the II° century. Under the first Christian centuries, the piève of Canary depends on évêché on Saint-Florent.

Several vestiges of the Pisane time were put at the day going back to before X° century, one can still admire the church Santa Maria Assunta of the XII° century, which is in a perfect state of conservation although having undergone later architectural modifications.

With the XI° century, the Corsica Cape is dominated by two génoises families: Avogari-Gentile and Peverelli. Two downward families of Génois Ido sent in Corsica into 952 by Oberto, marquis de Toscane, to levy the taxes. Avogari drove out Peverelli and faced the admiral Ansaldo Da Mare which seized the power of the north of the Cape until Barrettali about 1200. In 1335, Jean Avogari leaves the stronghold of Canary to his André son whereas the strongholds of Nonza and Brando go to its others wire.

End of the XV° century, Vincentellu de Gentile (Avogari) appendix valleys of Sisco and Pietra Corbara in Canari. It has two wire: Napoleone (wire bastard) and Vincenzu which divide the seigniory. Napoleone, dissatisfied with the division, stabs his/her Vincenzu half-brother during part of failures to the castle of Canary on August 15th, 1491. The population revolts and Napoleone flees towards Genoa where it is stopped, condemned to died and decapitated by Génois with Canari even. The stronghold is allocated then to the girl of Vincentellu de Gentile, Gesalmina, widow of Cinarcais Rinucciu di Leca, lord of Vicu, died in deportation in 1490. Gesalmina remarie in Génois Gerolamo Gentile, which becomes thus lord of Canary.

In 1506, construction of the Church and Saint-François Convent in Canari. The establishment of Franciscains had begun in Nonza with construction from a first convent.

Does the stronghold of Canary return then in Parigi Gentile, brother of Gerolamo, which sells in 1536 to an Italian (Génois or Romain?) name of Pierbattista Cenci (? - 1579), which, on this occasion, corsise its name in Santelli Cenci. At the time of the war of Sampieru, Pierbattista Santelli Cenci takes the party of Sampieru, while his/her own son Antonio Santelli Cenci takes the party of Génois and is made kill with the battle of Caccia. 1554: the village of Linaghje (see Photo) and the castle of Canary are shaved by the admiral génois Andrea Doria in reprisals with the support brought by certain lords to the French and to Sampieru. Part of the Mattei family which lives this hamlet takes refuge in the common neighbor of Barrettali.

1558: the French take again the Corsica Cape and send Bertrand of the Masses to devastate Canari to be avenged, this time, of those which had taken party for Génois.

1580: Horatio (Oraziu) Santelli Cenci (? - 1595), second wire of Antonio, is recognized by Genoa like heir to the stronghold.

1588: the barbaresque pirates of Algiers ordered by Hassan Bey destroy Ugliastru and his navy (Albu), a very close village. With died of Horatio, the capacity hesitates a time between an uncle, the “Meliaduce”, and Pier Battista Santelli II, wire of Horatio.

It is Pier Battista II which preserves finally the stronghold and transmits it to his/her son Laurent Enzo Santelli who will be colonel of the army of the Pope.

The only girl of colonel Santelli, Victoria, is forced to sell the stronghold in 1710 with noble a génois of the name of Fieschi which preserves it until 1768, date of the sale of Corsica in France by Genoa.
