Demography
History
Its foundation is estimated between 1340 and 1350. Canals was very important during the Moslem domination. Its privileged situation as well as the presence of two rivers (Cáñoles and Sants) guaranteed fertile grounds to him. It is at that time that were built the irrigation canals, which are in great number in the commune. In the Province of Lérida a locality of the same name exists, and it is not excluded that the origin of the colonists following the Reconquista determined the name of the locality, as that arrived in the case of other Valencian municipalities. Conquered by the Crown of Aragon and repopulated as a majority by Catalans, Canals preserves, like a gande left the community, the language, the culture and the history of the latter.
In the " Tour" (" Torre") from Canals (now a district of the city) was born the Pope Calixte III in 1378.
