Canadian Monarchy

The Canada is a Constitutional monarchy and a country of the the Commonwealth having like Monarque and Head of State the Queen Elisabeth II.

In Canada, the official title of Its Majesty is “Elizabeth Two, by the Grace of God, Reine of the United Kingdom, Canada and its other kingdoms and territories, Chef of the Commonwealth, Défenseur of the Faith. ” One describes his legal entity by the sentence “His Majesty the Queen of Canada”. Usually, one designates the Queen Elizabeth II by the expressions “the queen”, “the queen of Canada”, “His Majesty” “His Majesty of the Chief of Canada” or “His Majesty of the chief of the Province of (name of the province)” when they are the businesses concerned with a provincial state.

Constitutional monarchy

The most remarkable aspects of the Canadian constitutional monarchy are the following:

  • Although the Queen Elizabeth II is also monarch of the the United Kingdom, the United Kingdom does not hold therefore a sovereignty on Canada (nor Canada on the United Kingdom). In all the businesses, the queen of Canada is advised exclusively by her Canadian government (see also private Conseil of the Queen for Canada). No British government can advise the monarch Canadian on Canadian subjects. The Statut of Westminster of 1931 replaced the concept of a British monarch with colonies of the United Kingdom with that of a monarch on the thrones of several different kingdoms.

  • Any executive power rests theoretically on the queen, represented in Canada by the General governor and the lieutenant governors of the provinces. The royal Sanction is necessary for all the bills of the Parlement and the provincial legislative assembled , which sit at its good pleasure. The people lending Oath of allegiance to Canada, for example the Immigrating S, the soldiers, and the members of Parliament, do it with His Majesty the queen of Canada, the legal entity of Canadian sovereignty.

  • However, as it is the case in the United Kingdom, the role of the queen is almost entirely symbolic system and cultural, and the capacities which are legally them his are practiced entirely according to the council of the elected government. However, in exceptional circumstances, the Queen can act against these councils on the basis of her capacities of reserve. In practice, monarchy acts as “'seal of approval” and is a symbol ceremonial of the executive authority. One could say that the Queen “reigns” without “ordering”.

  • the Queen Elizabeth II, as it is the case for all its other kingdoms other than the United Kingdom, usually uses the role of “queen of Canada” only when it is in Canada or (sometimes) when it has recourse to certain functions having relationship with Canada (for example, to decree Canadian honors) in the United Kingdom. The majority of the duties of the queen are carried out by the general governor, while the queen could theoretically reverse her decisions. An exception to this rule occurred at the time of some visits of State of the queen in the United States, since these visits had the tendency to be incorporated in visits prolonged in Canada. For example, at the time of the American visit in 1959, the dinner of the queen for the president of the United States took place to the Canadian embassy in Washington, not with the British.

  • Although the role visible of the queen in Canada decreased considerably towards the end of the 20th century, its image is on all the coins, the ticket of 20 dollars, and on postage stamps. Usually its portrait is in all the governmental offices, the military installations, the Canadian schools, and foreign embassies.

  • the queen is with the head of the Canadian mode of honorary distinctions. It only thus has the capacity to approve the creation of a new honor on the council of the Canadian government. The general governor manages the responsibilities compared to the honorary distinctions, in the name of the queen.

  • Since the creation of the News-France, Canada was always a monarchy. It is among the oldest monarchies of the world.
