Camtel

Camtel (acronym of Cameroon Telecommunication ) is the public operator of telephony of the Cameroun. The company is in the process of privatization since 1998, the Cameronian State wishing to yield 51% of its participation

History

Camtel was born in 1998 from the transformation from the direction from telecommunications (Ministry for the stations and telecommunications) into public limit company to which was added the Intelcam state enterprise, then in load of the international telephone calls. The subsidiary company of mobile telephony, Camtel-Mobil, was sold with the operator of telecommunication MTN in February 2000.

These changes intervened during the liberalization of the sector of telecommunications in Cameroun. The following stage would have being the privatization of the Camtel company, which could not be realized for lack of investors. Indeed, the company did not profit from license GSM, the attracted main thing of the investors of the sector of telephony at that time.

In 2005, the company launched the telephone service Mobile CT-Phon, based on technology CDMA. The hardware requirement with the starting of the service was the subject of a gift of the Popular republic of China.

The company exploits the following products (2006):

  • Fixed telephone: approximately 110.000 lines
  • CT-Phon: approximately 155.000 lines (out of 2.000.000 of mobile lines)
  • ADSL
  • specialized Connections.

Financial health

Camtel is penalized by the non-payment of the Cameronian State which would owe him approximately 70 billion Francs CFA (more than 10 million Euros) in 2005.

In 2001, the MINEFI estimated the company at 102 billion Francs CFA (15,5 million Euros).
