History

The Camporosso toponym derives from Latin Campus Rubeus having milked with the pink solid masses of bay-trees along banks of Nervia. The origin of the name can also have a relationship with the slightly red color of the ground.

Roman period a funerary stele and vestiges of the aqueduct remain today which fed Albintimilium, current the Vintimille, of water of the Seborrino torrent.

The history of Comporosso follows practically that of Vintimille although its territory is at the border of Dolceacqua pertaining to the génoise family of the Doria and enemies of the counts of Vintimille. The proximity of Vintimille involved frequent bloody battles followed by military occupations of each of the two camps. Camporosso exists, as an autonomous commune, starting from September 15th, 1025.

In 1686, thanks to the Republic of Genoa, Camporosso is detached from Vintimille by forming “Magnifica Comunità degli Otto Luoghi” (the Splendid Community of the Eight Cities) including/understanding Bordighera, Borghetto Santo Spirito, San Biagio della Cima, Sasso, Soldano, Vallebona and Vallecrosia.

With the fall of the Republic of Genoa, following the French invasion of the troops of Napoleon Bonaparte (1797), the eight communes become independent and belong delle to the “Giurisdizione Palme” (jurisdiction of the Palms) with Sanremo like capital. They will belong then to the Royaume of Sardinia and, of course, in 1861, to the Royaume of Italy.

During the 19th century, the olives and the olive oil are the source of the incomes of many families and contribute to the prosperity of Camporosso.
