Campo Santa Margherita

The Campo Santa Margherita is a place of Venice located in the Sestiere of Dorsoduro. Its current form goes back to second half of the XIXe century. It is the consequence of the filling of various channels which joined on the campo. It draws its name from the old church of Holy Marguerite déconsacrée in 1810 and who remains in the north of the place with her bell-tower and interesting examples of Venetian houses of XIVe and XVe centuries.

The bell-tower, at the origin higher than that of San Marco, literally was cut into two and partially inserted in the surrounding houses. In the center of the campo the building of Scuola dei Varotari (furriers) was built.

On the Western side, one can see small palaces of Byzantine or Gothic style, in particular the palate Foscolo-Corner.

The campo is very animated the evening and the night thanks to the students of the close universities (IUAV and Ca' Foscari) and of the colleges (Traditional Colleges, Lycée Artistic, Institut of art, Scientific Lycée).

Its proximity with the station of Santa Lucia, Piazzale Roma where are the coach station and the most important museums and churches of Venice make campo an important node of the city which however lost a little its own nature. The too many bars with tourists and of students have in faded fact the aspect of a space where there are not so a long time the children played the ball or balls, rode bike or bought toys at Pettenello. One however finds there still elements of the Venetian daily life like a small market in fruit and vegetables and typical shops.
