Campbellton is a city located on the Baie of Heats, with the mouth of the Rivière Restigouche in the Comté of Restigouche at the northern end of the New Brunswick. The city counted 7.798 inhabitants in 2001.

Description

Campbellton was founded in 1889 and became a city in 1958. The city almost completely was destroyed at the time of a fire the July 11th 1910 but was quickly rebuilt.

The city is served by the train the Ocean (Montreal - Halifax) of Via Rail Canada. A small tourist train also circulates in the center of the city.

Built between 1958 and 1961, the Bridge J.C. Van Horne - name of a local political personality -, spans the Baie of Heats connects the city to Point-with-the-Cross and the territory intrigue of Lustiguj, with the Quebec. The bridge, length 805 m, was set up under the terms of a tripartite agreement between the governments of the Canada, the New Brunswick and the Quebec.

The former Prime Minister for Quebec Rene Lévesque was born at the hospital from Campbellton, to a hundred kilometers of New Carlisle with the Quebec, his birthplace “official”. At the time of the birth of Mr. Lévesque, Campbellton had the only modern hospital and served for this reason, the residents of the area, both in New Brunswick and in Quebec.

Demography

According to the census of Statistical Canada, it there had 7.384 inhabitants in 2006, compared to 7.798 in 2001, that is to say a fall of 5,3%. The city counts 3.485 private residences including 3.161 occupied by usual residents. The city has a Superficie of 18,66 km ² and a Population density of 395,7 inhabitants to the km ².

Administration

The Maire is Mark Ramsey and the city council men are Gilbert Cyr, John Hello, Sterling Loga, Christian Mercier, Gary Parker and Denis Turcotte.

Major events

The city was the host, with Bathurst and Dalhousie, of the 10th edition of the Jeux of winter of Canada, in February 2003. More than 3200 athletes took part in the 21 sports registered with the program.
