The campanien is a stratigraphic stage higher Crétacé. One dates it between 83,5  ±  0,7 and 70,6  ±  0,6  My, after the Santonien and before the Maastrichtien.

Stratotype

The campanien was defined in 1857 by Henri Coquand, according to the village of Champagne in Charente-Maritime. Its base is defined by the disappearance of the crinoïde Marsupites testudinarius and its top by a criterion biostratigraphic double : appearance of the Ammonite Pachydiscus neubergicus and of the bélemnite Belemnella lanceolata .
