Camp of Bierre
The Camp of Bierre , or also Camp of Beer , is a prehistoric, Celtic and Gallo-Roman archeological site, located on the commune of Merri, in the Orne.
It is a prehistoric camp of origin, with three enclosures (tri castrum) . It consists of a complex of buildings, is protected by ditches and triple enclosure from ground and dry stone. It was occupied Neolithic at the period Gallo-Roman E.
The site
The Camp of Bierre is located on a rocky outcrop and timbered dominating the plain of Trun. It covers a surface of 8 ha, delimited in north by the valley of the Dives, and in the west and the east by two small valleys.
History and description
Old and average Neolithic era

Presence of flint and shards attesting the occupation.

Construction of the principal enclosure, at the end of the spur. One can then speak about a Celtic site . The occupation of the site at that time is most important, as the great number of found shards attests it.

Last state of the enclosure. Medieval shards in the surface layers of the enclosure.

XIXe century

Excavations
Important excavations took place in 1980.
A building site of restoration of the enclosure was held in 2003. This restoration related mainly to the release of the Parement S of the enceinte.
Since 2005, surveys made it possible to document the rampart protohistoric and to specify the general Stratigraphie site.
The excavations take place during the summer.
Classification, notoriety of the site
Known and mentioned since the XVIIIe century, the site was classified Historic building in 1908. In its part best preserved, the enclosure independent measurement still 32 m base width, on a height of 7 Mr. It is recognized like one of the prehistoric sites most important of the West of France. 5 hectares out of 8 belong to the General advice of the Orne.

The visit is free. Visits with accompanying notes take place, each summer.
