Camp-site Cosmos
Camping Cosmos is a Belgian Film carried out by Jan Bucquoy and produced by Francis De Smet left in 1996. The film is held in 1986 and he speaks about the Belgian events of this year: Eurovision (Eurovision Contest of the song) and the Championship of the world of Football (Football world cup). The film has as an aim the life of the Belgians on vacation on a camp-site. The history of the girl of the organizer of the camp-site which returns in his/her father to the camp-site to Westende, is the starting point.
Introduction
Camping Cosmos is a Parodie on vacation on the Mœurs of the Belgian : in particular them sexual Life hidden, but, as all occurs on a Camping to the Belgian side, the Private life of the Belgians is revealed!
The matter of film is found in the quotation allotted to Louis Scutenaire: the woman is mysterious like the cow! So in the first part of the trilogy of sexual life of the Belgians : the Sexual life of the Belgians 1950-1978 (1994) one says: Made love once… in Camping Cosmos it is rather: Made the love Co (S) miquement! .
This is in contrast with the history moving by the girl of the organizer of the camp-site, Eve, who comes to re-examine her father after being attacked in Italy.
Another topic of film is of order Anthroposophique: " The current human being is presented there as a Microcosme to the image of the Macrocosme. " ,
Controversial film?
Although realized with a modest budget, this film succeeded in raising an immense controversy in Flandres due inter alia presence disputed to Lolo Ferrari in film. The Flemish Gouvernement even refused the premium of promised production, decision which was broken by the Council of State in 1998.
The film even caused a debate in the Flemish Parlement with an intervention of Karel De Gucht which reproached the Flemish Gouvernement for making Censure and which compared film with the Large one Puffs out and with Roma of Fellini.
This negative criticism on behalf of the Flemish government had like consequence a diffusion limited in the cinemas of France (1997) and Belgium (1996). The film began a new career in DVD like Film worship.
Synopsis
History

The cultural worker Jan Bucquoy is detached by the Ministry for the Culture to polish the program of the season; representation of Mother Courage of Brecht, initiation with modern poetry, conferences of the writer-philosopher Pierre Mertens…
The cultural worker must in addition regulate its personal problems. After a six weeks running away, his/her Eve daughter unloaded with the camp-site with a head of burial. He forever known to establish the contact and he now suspects the whole world of being only one big lie.
Will his/her father and the other pillars of Cosmos succeed in showing to him that all is not completely foutu, that the life can still have a direction if one manages to reconcile Happening and Hula-hoop , mytiliculture and Miss Cosmos, Marx and Merckx?
Jacques Calonne, delegated Ministry of Culture is attracted by the young girls (without the touch) and promises headstocks to them; the owner of the camp-site Mr Vandeputte (Jean-Paul Dermont) is furious when the artist Hermann (Hermann Brusselmans) practical his art while painting on the caravans. The camp-site is filled people looking of beautiful girls lasting the beauty contest, but certain girls receive only one mention 0.
The famous author Pierre Mertens (No5el Godin, the same actor that one finds in " Sexual life of the Belgians 1950-78 ") receives a tart on the face whereas he speaks with the radio about literature. Ursula (Sabrina Leurquin) and Cibulski (Jan Bucquoy) try on television to proclaim their terrorist ideals against publicity. There is the Italian cook (Angelo Bison) who cooks chips by making love with his wife, who gains the beauty contest and which will leave it later for the Hermann artist who will take it along on his Harley Davidson.
There is the fanatic of Eddy Merckx which transports its bicycle everywhere in the camp-site and which dies with " Eddy Merckx" on the lips. The radio operator organizer (Claude Semal, alias Tintin) is in love Mrs Vandeputte (Lolo Ferrari).
The friend of Eve (Antje de Boeck) has her first sexual experience in a car close to the camp-site. But, over all, there is the match of boxing with the former challenger of Cassius Clay.
In fact, the history reports us relation between a father which works like cultural worker in a camp-site and of his Eve daughter who returns after being removed but also from the adventures of the inhabitants of the Camping who have a whole a particular sexual life. The woman of the owner of the camp-site, Mrs Vandeputte (Milk Ferrari), seeks to be liked and tests herself with relations with certain men of the camp-site: the radio operator organizer, the factor, etc….
The cultural worker is a follower of Gramsci (in particular the cultural Hégémonie) and he wants to fill with enthusiasm people of the camp-site for the Culture but nobody comes to see Mère Courage and his/her children of Bertolt Brecht and nobody is interested in the interview on line of the famous author Pierre Mertens.
Jan (played by Jean-Henri Comp2ere) wants to attract people with a match of boxing, with a contest of song, with a beauty contest, but it is not what the ministry for the culture wants. It however finds happiness near his daughter who supports it.
The history finishes badly for Mrs Vandeputte: Milk is packed by her husband like a Momie and is launched in the sea. The camp-site receives the visit of the police force and each one leaves the camp-site in the feeling of despair.
Atmosphere
" Hello Cosmos! "Accompanied by the radiophonic voice by a cultural worker, the Camp-site Cosmos wakes up. And all its small world is branned. A camp-site out of shorts, barechested, the soap with the hand, moves towards the showers, the caravan of the whore has abrupt jolts, the young artist with black glasses starts again to paint its slogans on the caravans, in the " friture" , one peels potatoes, Mister and Mrs Vandeputte start their first argument of the day, the toilets stop themselves, the babies cry, the children shout, the transistors howl… While Sandra kim Braille I like the life , one of the cultural workers posts the program of the day: " reading of poetry, sand castle, discusses politique". A woman leaves her caravan and shakes her door mat. She rests it in front of the door. On the door mat, it wrote there: " Bienvenue".
Jan Bucquoy became temporarily stimulating in a small team subsidized by the ministry for the culture. It is in charge of a cultural program intended to bring art closer to the people and vice-versa.
While they is dedicated to its task, his/her daughter comes to join it. For the father and the girl, it is the occasion to start a dialog which forever take place, the father having left his Therese wife with the birth of her daughter. This dialog will proceed on the principle of the " giving-donnant". The father goes back to the source: birth of Eve (" Your mother wanted avorter"). Eve telling her running away by bits: " They took back us to the highway. One did not know or outward journey. One began with puer… ". But does she say all the truth?
La daily life of the Camp-site Cosmos with its tragi-comic incidents is thus intersected by flash-backs which reconstitute the running away of Eve and research of the father. All that in the middle of the environment of the retransmission on giant screen of the Championship of the football world (Mexico 1986) and the folderols of the ball of Saturday evening.
However the " culturisation" intensive of the Camp-site Cosmos continues… The organizers multiply the initiatives in the almost general indifference. They are questioned: why is it so difficult to reconcile the foot and surrealist poetry? In other words: Rene Magritte, Scutenaire, Marcel Mariën, Delvaux. are they forgotten in Cosmos?

Accomplice of the entartor No5el Godin, and with the assistance of his faithful producer and friendly Francis De Smet, Jan Bucquoy sets out again with the attack of the sexual life of the Belgians with this second shutter devoted to the life in Camping. A generous distribution, certainly, but he seeks before very demolishing the traditional fabric of the 7th art by standardizing the exceptional one, and the ends which he evokes put forward the essential values. Jan Bucquoy is sentimental in anger, nothing is not unnamable, nothing is too subversive or condemnable because essence is not there.

In spite of appearances, Camping Cosmos is an incorrect film completely Politiquement! It is enough to realize of the following examples:
- the murder on Mrs. Vandeputte of which nobody wants to know the assassin;
- the Antiféminisme and the Sexism: the woman is mysterious like the cow ;
- the free Terrorism: it is shown how to make bombs;
- the Entartage of the Belgian great writer;
- the inspector of the ministry which is baited to collect slipways of headstocks;
- the poem on the king Baudouin Ier: " the fag of Laeken… " , poem of Louis Scutenaire;
- the Graffiti on the caravans: the cinema is an artificial anus ; This is a work of art ;
- the way in which the film makes fun of the beauty contests (female);
- and contests of interpretation of songs;
- presentation of large Belgian artists like Autistic (for example: Arno (Belgian singer));
- presentation of the majority of the women like attacks of Hysterical Nymphomania ;
- songs of Claude Semal and the way with which it commits suicide ( Noble Belgium );
- the ode with the Masturbation of the Cybulski terrorist;
- the lightness with which one suggests the procuring of the jockey;
- the ridiculous one which is released from the presentation of the Cartoons of Tintin;
- and, in the same way, the way in which Claude Semal turns into ridiculous publicities on television:

Caution: all this is badly lived by ingenuous Eve, who thinks to be with the Jardin of the delights and which wonders whether Camp-site Cosmos is the camp-site of the terrestrial Paradis or of the Enfer. It incarnates innocence on the camp-site, which is contradictory with the Eve of the Bible which incarnates the temptation which will have like consequence the final ejection of the man of the paradise.
Characters
- Claude Semal, presenter with Radio Cosmos, launches a advertizing Détournement tasty on the toothpaste and the beauty creams. He sings Noble Belgium and Né to die . He has the appearance of sad a Clown (he carries a Masque during its sexual activity with Lolo Ferrari) in this camp-site esque Carnaval or everyone saw one beside the other in morose sentimental by hiding its true personality and its defects (see the drawings of James Ensor: scandalized masks , Death continuing the herd of human the (painted in 1896, exactly 100 years before the exit of film) and the intrigue (1890)). It will sink in despair and will commit suicide. Claude Semal bears his name in film and he plays the sour organizer of radio-Cosmos to the tintinesque look. He is the ironic voice, nicely criticizes which tells what she wants of course the onders with sentences assassinate kind: " sponsoring is with art what the crab-louses are with the amour". Jan Bucquoy plays the part of Cybulski, which is anything else only the Homonyme of Zbignieuw Cybulski, star Polish in the Love at twenty years (1962) of max Ophüls, Andrzej Wajda, François Truffaut etc…) in an act of Masturbation with beer, inspired by a poem of the poet gréco-Roman Lucien de Samosate.
- No5el Godin is made Entarter itself in its role of the writer Pierre Mertens. - Lolo Ferrari is represented on the posters which announce the election of Miss Cosmos that everyone will want to see. It reads as well the psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich as the tales of the queen Fabiola. On the other hand the representation with the camp-site of the play of Bertolt Brecht Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder is a failure: nobody comes to look at. It is about a scene with table or the husband complains about sauerkraut to his wife, an equivalent scene of household is in the Sexual life of the Belgians 1950-78 or it is the woman who is moulding the bread which is annoyed. Mrs Vandeputte, the woman of the manager is (for it) an unhappy girl, neurotic who seeks happiness. She finds that her husband forsakes it then she goes " to see ailleurs". She is badly in her skin. She has simple pleasures but one cannot see a idiot there! She is conscious of having also been committed thanks to her chest and her look in general. She manufactured a new body starting from the female ideal from annéées the 50/60, like Bardot, Barbarella, Jayne Mansfield, etc She knows that she causes in spite of her.
- Arno (Belgian singer) plays the part of the homosexual rescuer Harry. There remains indifferent in advance of Mrs Vandeputte, the woman of the owner of the camp-site played by pulpy the Lolo Ferrari…
- Jean-Pierre Coopman (former challenger of Cassius Clay with Puerto Rico on February 20th 1976!) launches out in a boxing match against Freddy De Kerpel. The opponents wanting to make true, they clash with a rare violence in film…

- persons in charge of the camp-site (the Vandeputte couple: Milk Ferrari and her husband and the cultural worker Jean-Henri Compère) want to attract people and they imitate the Concours Eurovision of the song with a contest of song or part of the participants sings false; the championship of the world of the heavy trucks of Jean-Pierre Coopman against Cassius Clay is imitated by a match between Jean-Pierre Coopman and Freddy De Kerpel; the World one (Football world cup World cup of the FIFA) of football one sees it on a screen with the camp-site; the contest of Miss Universe is imitated by a local beauty contest Miss Cosmos and the theater of the world is imitated by the part of Bertolt Brecht that nobody comes to see.
- It acts of a play in which one opposes topics: the Universal (metaphysics) of the cosmos against the Microcosm, of the Camp-site, the camp-site being the Metaphor Singular and of the private individual: Sexual life of the Belgians to the reduced direction of the term. Without forgetting the opposition of Eve (the girl of the organizer) and her buddy with the entourage of the characters of the camp-site who are adults Décadent S.

- Pourtant the terrestrial Paradis was well announced in Lolo Ferrari by the Hymne of the Soviet Union (Refrain III: " We see the future of our pays"), by the Pomp and Circumstance ( Land off Hope and Glory ) sung by Vera Lynn with the Glenn Miller orchestrated , by the song the sky, the sun and the sea and by the comic strips Tintin in Congo and Tintin with the country of the Soviets during and after its Orgasme. The orgasm being a metaphor for the knowledge of the Forbidden fruit which drives out human paradise, and the country to which one dreams being a Métaphore of this paradise. Another erotic metaphor is the scene of copulation between the salesman of fried Mr Crapaud, Italian who wanted to sell pizza pies, (Angelo Bizon) and its wife Angèle Crapaud (name of significant animal) or one shows in alternative sequence ebullient chips.

With the background, is held the Belgian Apothéose with on a screen the eighth of finale of the Football world cup of 1986 with the match of Belgium against Russia (gained by 4-3) and the song of Sandra Kim I like the life which gained the Concours Eurovision of the song of 1986. But more the beautiful song it is the interpretation of The Man I Coils Gershwin during the contest of song to the camp-site.
Comparisons with other films
- Camping Cosmos makes think of film Jean Renoir the Rules of the game with its table of characters as different as eccentric, by the intrigues in love, the murder, the theater in theater etc… and with the Dolce vita of Fellini by its description of delirious characters. On the other hand the social environment of Camping Cosmos is well opposed to that of the Rules of the game and of the Dolce vita : it is not question of showing in this popular camp-site the Belgian high society .
- the motorbike accident Harley Davidson of the Autistic painter (which paints quotations on the caravans such as for example: art died, lives art! ) with its mistress (Gisele Crapaud, who is the woman of the manager of the Friterie), is a reference to the accident of Brigitte Bardot at the end of the film the Contempt (1963) and with the escape of Steve Mc Queen in the Great Escape (1963). It is about the only couple to the camp-site which is able to have a true human report/ratio. The couple Ulrique and Cybulski (which plays in fact the companion of Ulrique: Andreas Baader) prefers to flee in convertible Cadillac.
- the Suicide of Claude Semal is inspired by the film Humoresque (1946) in which Joan Crawford disappears in the sea at the end. It is about the opposite movement Mrs Vandeputte (Lolo Ferrari) which leaves the sea with a Allégorie of the Venus Birth. It is the way with Mrs Vandeputte of celebrating the first Orgasme of its life with Claude Semal which resembles curiously a Tintin Assexué. This scene in the sea is inspired by the famous scene of Anita Ekberg (Sylvia) in the Fontaine of Trévi (with in the center the god Océan (mythology)), in which it calls Marcello Mastroianni with the famous sentence: Marcello like young stag, hurry up! of the Dolce vita and of the famous scene or Ursula Andress leaves the sea in the film Dr. No .
- the wink with the American novel The Postman Always Rings Twice (and its film adaptations) can seem obvious for the amateur of cinema when the factor returns to twice in the caravan of Lolo Ferrari (Mrs Vandeputte), only in the factor sounds always twice. there is no factor which appears (the factor carries the initial C.C.C.P. on its satchel to letters, transcription Cyrillic of the acronym " Soïouz Sovietskikh Sotsialistitcheskikh Respoublik" name of the ex-USSR but also with " Communist camp-site Cosmos and Populaire" and with " Committee of the creators against the publicité").
- Camping Cosmos makes think of the Holidays of Mr. Hulot and Playtime in what the film " resemble these doubtful postcards exhibant the anatomies of the summer. But once the turned over chart, one discovers that it is a good friend which made us the blague.".
Layers of narration
The film covers different subjects by building parallel stories. The inhabitants of the camp-site are in a purgatory of passage which will prepare them with the new life after the holidays; holidays being a Metaphor for this purgatory in which the capital fished seven are approached: the Idleness, the Pride, the Lust, and the Gourmandise the are fished common ones of all the inhabitants of the camp-site, the Envie and the Colère for Claude Semal and Mr Vandeputte, and one knows the Avarice by the mother of Bucquoy which is on the poster (it is a photograph of the sexual life of the Belgians ) in which Mrs Vandeputte presents Mère Courage and her children.1. History of Eve and her dad: she thinks of finding her father and the Paradis at the coast belge.
2. Problems to carry the culture to the people (Gramsci); it is what the actors of Mère Courage , the cultural worker, Pierre Mertens and Jacques Calonne test faire.
3. The cosmic camp-site and events (world) on a human scale (microcosmic): Miss Cosmos, the contest of song, the match of boxing, football and the theater…
4. Vision of the realizer who sees the whole of in top and which uses the music to intervene in the atmosphere, for example: Maria Elena , sky and the ground etc…

Criticisms
This film shows the Belgium under a particular aspect, although the subject is universal, the spectators of other countries will recognize there also the aspects of their own country.-
the realizer has this to say: Camping Cosmos is shelled around resistance to the psychoanalysis, the culture, with the love, the identity. It is the final fight between a poor world based on the exchange of goods and a sublime world based on the exaltation of the desires.
In this film I joined together my lowland on a dune vis-a-vis the North Sea on which it clings against winds and tides. My campsite is populated exiled, like are for example the patients of a public hospital or the members of a proletarian Club the Mediterranean. My point of view is sometimes distant as if I observed these shipwrecks of the life starting from cosmos.
Le film is built like the life of people: it is done hollow, holes, of with blows, tricks which go very quickly or very slowly. It is as when one tells a film which one saw, one tells it by bits. Moment when one is inside, of the moments in whom one is outside or with côté.
Voici a film as I dreamed: free, excessive sometimes, car-dérisionné, tender, perplexed, unsubdued, barbarian, voluptuous… in short a film or all is allowed.
