Geography

History

Campénéac comes from the Latin * Campaniacum formed with the suffix of origin Gaulois E - acum ; attested (Negro Ernest, n°7535) in the form Kenpeniac in the year 840. Campénéac comes, seems it, of Campanius, first lord of Campénéac, or refers to the Roman camps located close to the forest of Brocéliande.

Campénéac is a Gallo-Roman fundus and can for this reason be regarded as a primitive parish. Campénéac is quoted like parish as of the 9th century (Cartulaire of the abbey of Redon, Charte CVII). To also announce that the " place; Bernéan" or " Brenéen" is known as of the year 480 pennies the names of Broon-Ewin or Read-Broniwin. The parish of Campénéac depended formerly on the diocese of Saint-Malo.

Campénéac is set up in commune in 1790 and chief town of canton. In 1802, Campénéac passes in évêché of Valves.

Foot-note: Campénéac is known at the court of Louis XIV thanks to the song of the " Guy of Campénéac" , made up in 1585.
