History
The tradition wants that it is Charlemagne which has, in 778, founded a monastery on this small rock eminence located in a curve of the Hers. A strengthened abbey was built thereafter, given in 943 to the abbey of Lagrasse. With the XIIe century it became a simple priory about it. The first strengthened enclosure was built at the same time, as well as the castle of Montaragou. June 18th 1279, the abbey and its fortifications was destroyed by the rupture of the stopping of Puivert, which also carried Mirepoix and the other villages of the valley. In 1494, the village and its abbey are again put at bag, this time by a band of plunderers. It is Philippe de Lévis-Mirepoix, bishop of Mirepoix and prior of Camon, which will rebuild at the beginning of the XVIe century the whole of the buildings that one sees today, of which the rampart of the village. Between 1560 and 1570, the Georges cardinal of Armagnac, then prior of Camon, finishes the enclosure by joining a round tower there. During the creation of the departments, Camon was included/understood in the Aude and was joined together with the Ariège in 1794.
