Camille Roy

Camille Roy (October 22nd 1870 - June 24th 1943) was the first Critique arts person Québécois of the 20th century.
Originating in Berthier-in-Low (today Berthier-on-Sea) in the county of Montmagny, it enters to the Petit seminar of Quebec in 1884 and to the Grand Seminar of Quebec in 1890. Roy is ordered priest in 1894, and it obtains its doctorate in 1895 then its license with the Sorbonne in 1900.
In Paris, he contemplates on Villemain, Nisard, Holy-Beuve and Brunetière, which will influence it later. Its literary career starts in 1902, when it publishes in the review News-France .
It is interested in the writer Philippe Aubert de Gaspé, then starts to write handbooks of literature to the service of the Université Laval in 1907. Roy writes the forewords of the poet Pamphile Lemay.
Its interest extends to the biography, with publications on Jean Rivard, Joseph Quesnel, the Abbé Casgrain and Monseigneur de Laval. It publishes texts of lyric poetry égalemement.
Camille Roy recognized that the Canadian Littérature was yet only at its beginnings, and its criticism always went in the direction of the encouragement for best épaouissement of the letters. It developed the French Classicisme and “French clearness”, while criticizing the bombastic style of the Canadian speakers.
It belongs Priest-critical to the S which marked the literature Canadian-Frenchwoman at the beginning of the 20th century. It also founded the review French Canada .
Because of sound moralism, it did not make the criticism of works surrealist Symbolists and , and it was severe with regard to Henri Heine, which according to him was not a “apostle of the good ideas”. On Albert Laberge, author of “Scouine”, it will say of him that he was the “father of the Pornographie in Canada”.
Roy made the synthesis of the Canadian Historiographie, it tackled the Québécois university problem and it composed some works of Apologie for the Christian religion which defend the Humanisme believing. Roy wished to limit the influence of the Canadianisme S in the literature, proclaiming that the literature owes being human before being Canadian.
He becomes the vice-chancellor of the Université Laval in 1922, station which he will keep almost all his life. Camille Roy is deceased the June 24th 1943.
Almost forgotten today, its influence on the letters was impossible to circumvent until the Quiet revolution. It has as a disciple the writer Maurice Hébert.
The library of Berthier-on-Sea bears its name today.
