Camember sapper

The sapper Camember (François-Baptist-Ephraïm) is the hero of one of the first French cartoons due to Christophe (1856 - 1945): jokes of the sapper Camember .

Character

Camember is a character of illiterate soldier and a little simpleton whose intrigues are often absurd. Born the February 29th 1844 in the imaginary village from Gleux-the-Lure (the Higher Saone), it can celebrate its birthday only every four years, and is thus (after a noisy childhood) mobilized as of its fifth candle…

It affected like Sapeur, i.e. soldier of the military Engineering, which is already a point of irony have regard to its weakness of spirit.

Its simplicity is illustrated, for example, when it digs a hole to put the ground of another at it; it is true that it is then exceeded in stupidity by its superior, the Bitur sergeant, who treats it of “double horned mule” and reproaches him for not having made the second rather large hole so that one can put at it his ground with that of the first.

Camember is expressed in French whom he would like punished, but which indicates a species of inculture pedant; for example, addressing itself to Victoire: " Be-I-T there rather happy if you would do that to me to ask for a service which I would be harshly satisfactory you obtempérer? " ; in the same way, addressing itself to the colonel: " my colonel can ingurgiter by oneself that the sapper does not have it point-Z-coating of error (...) as my colonel can to it obtempérer itself by his visual sight and subséquente" .

What strikes throughout the album, it is the incapacity of the poor sapper to understand the language which its superiors speak to him, who besides never worry to put themselves at his range. It is frequent with the major, i.e. the doctor: this one known as in Camember, which complains to have “guernouilles” in the belly, to put leeches on the stomach; the sapper will seek his leeches with the infirmary, the fact of cooking and eats them, since they should be put on the stomach.

Another time the major notes that Camember suffers from ophthalmia and that could become purulent; he thus advises to him to get fume preserves (i.e. tinted glasses) which he will have to carry all the time. The sapper understood that it has of “the water of salmi” in the eyes and that it is likely to become “pure Uhlan”, it goes then in the porkbutcher to get “fume preserves”, so that the adjudant meets it with a ham under each arm and of sausages rolled up around its bonnet. Not including/understanding anything with the explanations poor Camember it dispatches it in the shade, remedy excellent against the evils of eyes and the sapper finds himself cured.

Publication

The adventures of the Camember sapper are appeared in serial of 1890 with 1896, then were gathered in an album.

The realizer Jean-Christophe Averty at the time carried out for the Télévision an adaptation of the Sapeur Camember turned with truths actors in the drawings of Christophe by techniques of incrustation Vidéo, considered as revolutionists.

Quotation

" life, alas! is only one fabric of stabs which it is necessary to know to drink drop by drop; and, I say it highly, for me the culprit is innocent! " (pleading of Bafouillet Master, lawyer of the Camember sapper when this one passes in the Council of war for insult to a superior) To note that formula " celebrates it; However, like said it judiciously a famous author: " when the terminal is crossed it is not any more limits! " is not allocated to the sapper. It is in the Family Fenouillard , chap. " With the threshold of eternity.

Brotherhood

In February 2004 with Lure, in the honor of the Camember Sapper was created the Confrérie of the Sapper whose first currency is the autodérision.
