Camarès

Camarès is a common French and a canton of the south Aveyron in the area the Midday-Pyrenees.

Geography

Located at 23 kilometers in the south of Saint-Affrique and at 80 kilometers of Béziers, it is crossed by the Dourdou de Camarès and is with the foot of the Monts of Lacaune.

Its red ground, the Rougier, is of nature schisto - sandy. It contains a rich person basement who allowed, as of the Gallo-Roman time, the exploitation of the first mines of Cuivre or siver-bearing Plomb.

History and culture

Initially Camarès indicated the area and the city carried the name of Bridge-with-Camarès . It undoubtedly drew this name from the Bridge Old whose date of construction is unknown, 11th century. The city is mentioned in 883, like sits of a Carolingian Viguerie, in the Cartulaire of the abbey of Vabres. Its territory included the north of current the Canton of Camarès, and some adjacent communes. The south of the current canton constituted an independent viguery whose chief town was Brusque.
