Cam (mechanical)

See also: Cam

A cam is a body Mécanique intended to transform a movement Rotation into movement of Translation or rotation.

It is generally about a Cylindre of variable ray involved in Rotation by a tree. The part in contact with the profile of the cam, the follower, is then put moving.

A succession of cams interdependent of the same tree is called a Camshaft. It is used in the majority of the internal combustion engine, it is besides the most common use of this device.

Types of cams

  • Cam with external profile: generate an effort of thorough
  • Came with interior profile: generate a tractive effort
  • Double-acting cam (interior profile and outside)

Following contact cam/

The contact must be continuous to avoid the shocks, vibrations and noises. The follower is generally maintained in contact by a spring. It is the role within the competence of valve in the case of the camshaft in the internal combustion engines. The movement is transmitted by direct contact (friction) or indirect via a roller.

The direct contact induces a resistive torque on the cam due to friction then involving a loss of energy dissipated in the form of heat in the two parts in contact. The Tribologie studies these interactions between various surfaces.

The use of a roller makes it possible to increase the output of this system of transmission by reducing frictions, but poses a problem of obstruction.
