Calvisson

Calvisson is a common French, located in the department of the Gard and the area Languedoc-Roussillon.

Geography

Calvisson is a commune of the Gard located at 17 km in the western south of Nimes.

History

  • the site is occupied since the Chalcolithique. It is under the domination of the Counts de Toulouse that a specific name for Calvisson appears for the first time ( In terminium of Calvitione 1060). Calvisson then has a Château surmounted by two turns whose whole covers 2000 m ². This fortified town orders all the Vaunage.

  • From the 16th century, with the beginnings of the Reform, Calvisson is taken in the storm of the wars of religion. The village becomes a hearth of the Protesting ism. The wars gradually will ruin the castle which as of the middle of the next century is not used any more but as stone quarry.

  • In 1703, Calvisson is in the middle of the war of the Camisards. The village is used as a basis for the royal troops in the battle of Nages against the forces of Jean Cavalier.

  • In 1787, the Rock of Gachone which overhangs the village is used as benchmark with Cassini for Cartographie R the area.
