Calved

Velas is a commune of the islands of the the Azores.

The commune counted, in 2001, 1  929 people, for one population density of 127,1/km ² and a surface of 15,18 km ². The common one belongs to the island of São Jorge , of which it occupies the Western part. It is the principal port of the island. As for other deep water ports of the Azores (Horta, Angra C Heroismo), it shelters with the foot of an old volcanic cone.

The common one counts 6 localities ( freguesias ). The other commune of the island east Calheta, located at the east. The other commune nearest is Santa Cruz da Graciosa, on the island of Graciosa in north.

The village was founded towards 1500. Velas means candles in Portuguese, drawing his name from a legend according to which candles transported by a ship shipwrecked man were failed regularly on the village.
