Calorstat

Calorstat: autonomous Part of an internal combustion engine with liquid cooling (car, truck, motor bike…) being used for bringing it to its operating temperature in less possible time.

Operation

After starting, the engine is cold, the water circulation is limited to the cylinder head of the engine. The engine goes up quickly in Température in this case because it is then badly cooled. When the temperature of opening of Calorstat is reached, this kind of valve (Calorstat) opens and the cooling water circulates then in the entirety of the coolant circuit. The volume of water preheated mixes with that which until had been insulated there, the temperature of the liquid of cooling will be homogenized. The engine is then close to its optimal operating temperature.

Utility

Without this composing type, the engine can spend a very important time to reach its beach of optimal temperature. In lower part of this beach, the wear of the engine is very important, it is thus paramount, for a question of longevity, to remain there less the possible for a long time, and by using less possible couple. It is from there that this concept has just made heat the engine before starting to roll.

Failure

The mode of failure of this part is generally dramatic.

While remaining wedged in closed position, this valve involves an overheating engine which is accompanied by an overpressure in the coolant circuit too important for the cylinder head gasket. The only thing to hope in this case is that the conspicuous one of control of temperature ignites and that the driver has the presence of mind to cut the engine immediately before the temperature criticizes is not reached.

On the other hand, if there remains wedged in opened position, the ideal temperature of operation is very long to reach what causes to accentuate the wear of the engine. This second case is however much less serious than the first because wear is not “immediate” and the risks of overheating are isolated.

Particular cases

In race, the preparers withdraw this component to avoid this possible failure at all costs.

The name “Calorstat” is a registered trademark. This name passed in the everyday usage as refrigerator to indicate a refrigerator. The exact designation of this device is “Thermostat”.
