Calixa Lavallée
Calixa Lavallée (December 28th 1842, Verchères, Quebec - January 21st 1891, Boston, Massachusetts), of its true name Callixte Lavallée, was a Compositeur, a Leader, a Pianiste, a Organiste and a professor of Musique Québécois. In Canada, it is especially known to have composed the music of the National anthem, O Canada .
Biography
His/her father was Bûcheron and Forgeron. By afterwards, it became repairing of musical instruments and teacher of music in his community.After being itself established with St-Hyacinthe, his father works for the factor of Orgue S Joseph Casavant. Eleven years, Calixa played of the organ and, two years later, gave a concert of Piano to the royal Théâtre of Montreal.
In 1857, Calixa is established with the Rhode Island, with the the United States. After having gained a musical competition with the New-Orleans in Louisiana, it accompanied a Spanish Violoniste , named Olivera, with the Brésil and the the Eastern Indies. Of return to the United States, it engages in the northern army during the American Civil War, and became lieutenant after having fought.
During and after this war, it moved between Quebec and the United States. 1875 with 1877, supported by some admirors, it leaves to study musical science in France. Of return to Quebec, it continues to compose of the pieces of music: Operetta S, a Symphony and Song S.
In 1880, the National congress of the Canadian-French orders to him O Canada for the Saint John's day, the words being written by Adolphe-Basile Routhier. Seven years later, he became the president of the National association of the teachers of music. He tried to establish a Conservatoire music with the Canada, but the Gouvernement of Canada refused to finance it.
It was also a Leader, playing of the opera S and the Concert S of symphonic in important concert halls, of which that of the Académie of music of Montreal.
It is deceased in Boston, in 1891. Its remainders were repatriated with Montreal in 1933, and put out of ground at the cemetery Coast-of-snows.
