Calilegua national park

The National park Calilegua ( Parks Nacional Calilegua ) is in the south-east of the province of Jujuy, on the Eastern slopes of the Serranías de Calilegua .

Its creation in 1979 had like objective the protection of the yungas or subtropical wet forests of the slopes of the Andes, and safeguards it sources of the rivers of the sierra feeding the Río San Francisco. Its total surface area is of: 76320 hectares, which makes of him largest of the national parks of the Argentinian North-West (the NOA).

The park consists of two typical éco-areas of the province:

  • That of the yungas or wet forests of mountain. The climate of the yungas is hot and wet with estival rains giving of precipitations of 900 to: 1300 Misters This éco-area is found in the sierras subandines in the east of the Andes of Bolivia and the Argentinian North-West, between 400 m and: 3000 m of altitude.
  • That of the Puna or steppe of high mountain (beyond: 3000 m of altitude).
