Geography

History

The official name of the commune comes from the presence, on its territory, of ruins of the old city Greek that of Segesta, of which the old amphitheater.

It is on a hill close to Calatafimi, called Pianto dei Romani, that, in 1860, Giuseppe Garibaldi met for the first time the troops of the Bourbon S in a battle called Bataille of Calatafimi. It was the first important battle of the Italian unification (or Risorgimento) and it was in this battle that Giuseppe Garibaldi would have emitted this famous cry: “Here. we make Italy, or we will die”

Calatafimi is former to the Arab invasion of the Sicily of the 9th century. On the hill overhanging the city, one finds the ruins of the castle named Euphemius, a patriarch eucumenic of Constantinople. The name Calatafimi comes from the Arabisation of the name of Calatamini Castle out of Kalat-Al-fimi (Castle of Fimi)), which was Italianized under the current name.
