Caladan

Caladan is a fictitious planet of the universe of Dune created by Frank Herbert.

Caladan , third planet of the system Pavonis Delta, is the ancestral stronghold of the Maison Atréides and the world of birth of Paul Atréides where it spent the first fifteen years of his life. Atréides lived on Caladan during twenty-six generations in the Caladan Manor house, before emigrating towards Arrakis following political pressures.

The surface of Caladan is mainly immersed and its climate characterized by important precipitations and powerful winds, without to require special and expensive control measures climatic. The livable grounds primarily consist of meadows, marshes and bulky forests. The saving in Caladan is mainly agricultural, the local variety of rice Pundi constituting the first product of export and fishing being the traditional means of subsistence of its population. It also comprises secondary products, of which wine and the cattle, mainly bovine. The kitchen caladanaise is rather refined, the majority of its dishes containing of the meat.

Caladan has a powerful military defense force founded on the naval and air superiority, and the population of Caladan is savagely honest at the Atréides House. It is said that the forces of elite of the Atréides infantry compete of address with the Sardaukar of the Emperor. Because of such a military power, Caladan is regarded as impregnable, which pushes the enemies of Atréides to attract them towards a more vulnerable position: Arrakis.

After the period of the novel Emperor-God of Dune , Caladan is more known only under the name of daN .
