Cairns

Cairns (: 128284 inhabitants) is a city (" city") coastal of the Queensland in Australia. It is located at the North-East of the State, 346 km in the north of Townsville and 800 km in the south of the Cape York, at 1720 of Brisbane and with: 2500 of Sydney.

Founded in 1876, and baptized name of the governor of Queensland of the time, William Wellington Cairns, the city was used as economic center for the gold diggers of the Hodgkinson River then the city declined when a new easier access road to the area starting from Douglas Port was discovered. However at present the city began again of its importance while being used as starting point for the products of the area: ores, sugar, etc.

But Cairns is especially a tourist city of the east coast which has many assets:

  • proximity of the Large coral barrier, at one hour and half with boat.
  • Of many islands (like Green island) and of reefs.
  • the rain forest.

Cairns is a city which extends along the coast on 52 kilometers going from the south with " Aloomba" , in north with " Ellis Beach". The city develops by annexing the fields of Canne with sugar bordering the city but also the sides of the surrounding hills for lack of place and especially by novel mode. The center of the east city built on an old zone of marsh in edge of sea while the culminating point of the state, the Mont Bartle Frere is in the suburbs of the city.

History

The area of Cairns was, before the arrival of Europeans, occupied by Irukandji.

The future site of the city was seen for the first time by an European by the Capitaine Cook in 1770 and in the century which followed several forwardings visited the area and included/understood the possibility of creation of a port at this place. The gold discovery on current the Plate of Atherton and the need for finding a point of loading caused the creation of the city in 1876; The area where the city settled was at the beginning an area of Marais and Mangrove which was gradually development, deforested by the farmers while the marshes were filled by the rocks coming from a close hill, dried muds, sawdusts of different the sawmills from the area as of materials evacuated to build the way of railroad which connected Herberton to Atherton and whose construction started in 1886. The opening of the railway line made it possible to emphasize the surrounding agricultural areas with the culture of the cane sugar, corn, rice, bananas, pineapples in plain, the fruits and of the dairy breeding in mountain and the area took such a rise that it was necessary to undertake the creation of a port in 1906 to export all the local productions.

During the Second world war Cairns was used as starting point for military operations in the Pacific.

After the war, Cairns became gradually a tourist center and the opening in 1984 of the international airport of Cairns as of a center of the businesses made known the city internationally and made of them a famous place of holidays or meetings of businesses.

Climate

Cairns has a hot tropical climate in summer with rains of Mousson occurring between November and March. The soft temperatures occur in winter. Cairns is also prone to the possible activity of cyclones during the rain season between November and March. The March 20th 2006, the cyclone Larry, a cyclone of force 5, struck the area with winds of almost 300km/h in the surroundings of the city, of 180 km/h in the city. It is estimated that a house on four in the city and its area was more or less damaged by the cyclone.

Airport

In terms of international and domestic movements of passenger, the international airport of Cairns ( International Cairns , code AITA: CNS) is the sixth more active airport of Australia. More than three million international and domestic movements of passenger were recorded during the years 2003 and 2004. After Sydney and Brisbane, Cairns is the tourist destination most popular in Australia. Since July 31st, 2006 Air France served Cairns thanks to a division of code with the Qantas partner.

The international airport of Cairns is directly connected to the China, with HongKong, the Japan, the New Guinea-News-Guinea, the New Zealand, Singapore and the the United States.
