Cahit Arf
Cahit Arf (October 11th 1910 - December 26th 1997) was a Turkish Mathématicien. He was born with Salonique, which was then in the Ottoman Empire, and died in Istanbul in Turkey.
He supported his doctorate at the university of Göttingen under the direction of Helmut Hasse. He is known for the Invariant of Arf of a quadratic Forme in characteristic 2 (used in Théorie of the nodes) in topology, for the Théorème of Hasse-Arf in theory of the ramification and for the rings of Arf. He organized the visit of Robert Langlands in Turkey.
He taught a long time with the " Galatasaray Lisesi" and was professor with the Middle East Technical University (METU) and with the Istanbul Technical University (ITU). It received a national price for its research in mathematics applied. Its mission was to make revive Turkish mathematics; it was a paternal figure for the mathematical community of Turkey. Each year, the " are celebrated; days Cahit Arf" with the METU.
Cahit Arf is regarded as one of the largest mathematicians Turkish of the 20th century, with Selman Akbulut.
